Thomas M. McKelvey age 96 of Toronto passed away Thursday February 18, 2010 at the Valley Hospice Care Center North Steubenville, Ohio.
He was born October 6, 1913 in Toronto, Ohio the son of the late Thomas L. McKelvey and Myrtle Arnold McKelvey Hood.
Tom attended the First Presbyterian Church of Toronto.
He was a member and one of the original 15 founders of the Upper Ohio Valley Dapper Dan Club. He received the Dapper Dan prestigious Robert S. McKelvey Award. He served as a director of the Dapper Dan when it was formed in 1964 and also held the position of Treasurer and Secretary of the club. He was a former member of the Toronto Lions Club and the Jefferson Ruritan Club. He received the Toronto Area Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Tom had worked at a mens clothing store and at the former Fulmers Service Station in Toronto / the former Curtis Wright Factory in Beaver, Pa. during W.W.II making airplane propellers / Tom is retired as shipper and sales manager of the former Hilz Lumbar Co. of Toronto for 20 years and the Toronto City School System in maintenance and is presently employed by the Toronto City School System as an Attendance Officer. He was the oldest active employee in the Ohio School System serving for 44 years.
Tom was a friend and helper to many, many people in the area. He had a memory that many would envy up to his recent illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife Doris Boyd McKelvey who passed away in 1994 and whom he married November 8, 1941 and a brother Harold McKelvey.
Toms survivors are: Son: Gregg McKelvey and wife Chris of Mingo, Jct., Ohio
Step-Son: Boyd Townsend and wife Ruth of Mingo, Jct., Ohio
Sister: Jean Hanselman of Chester, W.Va.
Grandsons: Keith McKelvey and wife Kim of Dublin, Ohio Eric McKelvey and wife Christa of Dublin, Ohio Boyd Townsend, Jr. and wife Michelle of Weirton, W.Va.
Granddaughters: Cheryl Gilchrist of Steubenville, Ohio Jeanette Robertson of Mingo., Ohio Renee Labanna and husband Jason of San Antonio, Texas Eight great grandchildren
Half-Brother: Herbert Hood, Jr. and wife Ruth of Wellsville, Ohio
Half-sister: Betty Walko of Wellsville, Ohio
Special Friend: Patricia Young of Toronto, Ohio
Friends and family will gather for visitation 6-8 Saturday and also 1-3 and 6-8 Sunday at the Clarke Funeral Home 302 Main St. Toronto. 740-537-1234 or 800-588-1446.
A celebration service of Toms life will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday February 22nd at the funeral home with the Rev. Michael Bongart and Pastor Robert Hanze officiating. Burial will be at the Toronto Union Cemetery.
